ABSTRACT

Industrial wastes are basically hazardous and as the name implies poses threat and potential risk to human health if not properly managed. Thus, this study examines effects of industrial waste management practices (incineration, recycling), worker’s safety practices and worker’s occupational health attitudes on employees’ health status in selected industries in Oyo State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for this study while the study population comprised of industrial workers in Ibadan, Oyo State. Simple random sampling technique was used to select a sample of 270 employees and qualitative method ((use of questionnaire) was used for data. An instrument specially designed for this study   tagged “Industrial Waste Management and Workers Health Status Inventory (IWMWHSI was used for data collection.). Two research hypotheses were tested and analyzed with the use of Multiple Regression analysis and Pearson Moment Correlation Analysis at 5% level of significance. Findings revealed that there was a positive significant correlation between incineration and workers’ health status (r= .32, N= 270, P < .05), a positive significant relationship between recycling and workers’ health status (r= .24, N= 270, P < .05), a positive significant relationship between workers’ safety practices and workers’ health status (r= .16, N= 270, P < .05), and a positive significant relationship between workers’ occupational health attitude and workers’ health status (r= .17, N= 270, P < .05) Result also showed that waste management practices independently and significantly influenced employees health status while waste management practices, workers safety practices, workers occupational health attitude jointly and significantly predicted employees health status. The study concludes that waste management practices, worker’s safety practices, worker’s occupational health attitude were strong predictors of employee’s health status in industries in Nigeria. We therefore recommend that government should put policy in place to regulate and punish offenders of standard waste management practices. Erring industries should be sanctioned and also pay heavy compensation to affected workers.

Abstract: Nigeria as a country has always had highly recommended education programmes which sometimes have no positive effect on the society or often times die natural death due to poor implementation. This paper assesses the implementation related problems that hinders the attainment of MDGs in science education as well as the general goals of education. The paper identifies lack of proper retraining of teachers and supply, large class size, inadequate teaching facilities, deficient curriculum and overloaded syllabus as some of the problems.  The paper suggested the roles of government such as the recruitment of more science teachers and support staff, reform of the teacher education programme, the construction of more classroom blocks in the already existing schools as well as self improvement of individual teachers through workshops, seminars and in- service short training programmes in science if the country is to overcome the challenges of the MDGs in science education.

Abstract: This study examined the relationship between students’ scores on plain questions and scores on worded problems in Mathematics. The aim was to find out the extent to which students’ ability in solving problems involving plain question could predict students’ performances in worded problems in Mathematics. The study used a correlational design. Eighty senior secondary schools were drawn through purposive sampling technique from 16 selected public secondary schools from Bayelsa and Delta States. While 5 students were drawn from each of the sixteen schools selected from Bayelsa state, 5 students were chosen from each of the 9 schools drawn from Delta State. One research question and one hypothesis guided the study. With the assistance of some senior Mathematics teachers and colleagues from Measurement and Evaluation, the researcher constructed a ten-item Mathematics test involving arithmetic, algebra, statistics, trigonometry and geometry. The instrument had two sections, namely; A and B. Section A consisted of 5 plain questions and section B, 5 worded problems. The research question was answered through the use of co-efficient of determination while the hypothesis was tested at .05 level of significance using the Product Moment Correlation technique. The finding from the study showed that there was a significant relationship between students’ scores on plain questions and scores on worded problems in Mathematics. Forty-six percent of students’ ability to solve worded problems in Mathematics was predicted by their skill in handling plain questions in Mathematics. Students had a higher mean score in plain questions. It was recommended that while scoring Mathematics test items examiners and test constructors should take particular notice of responses from test-takers from different sub-groups. This is to guard against differential item functioning.

ABSTRACT

Technical Vocational Education and Training is that aspect of education which prepares individuals (male or female) to apply relevant practical skills to make changes within their society and afford self dependent or self employment. The objective of the study was to investigate the factors that militate against female participation in Technical Vocational Education and Training in Kano state. One null hypothesis test using Mann-Whitney test on mean rank significant Urban and Rural students responses to determine the significant differences the Urban and Rural responses on the factors that militate against female participation in Technical Vocational Education and Training in Kano state.   The survey research design was used for the study. The area of the study comprises of comprise 6 Senior female Science and Technical Colleges in Kano State. Purposive sampling was used to select two female science and technical colleges, one in Urban and the Other in Rural areas of Kano state. The target population of the study was 129 SSII female students. Simple Random sampling was used to select 60 SS II Female Technical and vocational students.  The Questionnaire was used named; Factors militating against Female Students Participation in Technical Vocational Education and Training Questionnaire. The instrument has reliability of 0.79. The data was analysed using mean and frequency count. Some of the findings include; Female students consider technical and vocational subjects as difficult. Poor image and status of technical and vocational education discourage female students in studying technical and vocational course. Only few Female students want to further their study in technical and vocational education. Some of the recommendations include; Female students should be encouraged to choose and further their studies in technical and vocational subjects. Technical and vocational teachers should always highlight the prospects of technical and vocational subjects toward empowerment of girls.
