ABSTRACT

This study is an expo facto research, which examined the effect of fraud on corporate organizations in Nigeria using secondary data from twenty two (22) listed firms in the Nigeria stock exchange. Three hypotheses were formed in line with the three specific objectives. The three hypotheses were tested using multi regression analysis with a computer based statistical model with the aid of econometric (E-view) version 3.1. The findings of the study showed that the amount lost to fraudsters has a strong and positive relationship with the asset depletion of corporate organizations in Nigeria, it reduces the profit of the corporate institutions and the cost of litigation to recover the amount defrauded are not always proportionate to the amount recovered. The following recommendations were made, institutionalization of strong and workable internal control measures, zero tolerance for incidences of fraud and preventive mechanisms are the best approach to avoid creating opportunities for fraudsters and incurring additional cost of litigation to recover amount stolen by fraudsters. Keywords: Corporate Organizations, Fraud Prevention, Detection, Investigation, and Litigation.

ABSTRACT

The research is on “Enhancing organizational performance through effective communication, a study of selected commercial banks in Abia State, Nigeria”. Data were collected from both primary and secondary sources. The sample size of 80 respondents was statistically derived from a population of 100.  Data collected were analyzed by use of percentage and table (descriptive statistics) and the three hypotheses were tested using spearman rank correlation with the aid of SPSS statistical tool. Based on the analysis, the study found that communication has a significant effect on the performance of an organization. Communication breakdown negatively affects the performance of organizations. Effective communication creates mutual understanding between management and workers which helps in building genuine relationship among both parties in the organization.  Based on the findings the researcher recommends among others that managers and employees should be trained in communication skill as it increases the effectiveness. For effectiveness, room should be given for suggestions. A comprehensive feedback system of communication should be adopted in both private and public sector organizations in Nigeria.

ABSTRACT

The study evaluated the relationship between internal attitude survey as a means of involving employees and organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB) in the telecommunication firms in Nigeria. It examined OCB on three of its measures namely altruism, civic virtue, and conscientiousness.  The cross sectional survey method was utilized for the study. The Krejcie and Morgan’s (1970) table on sample size determination was applied to get a sample size of 260 from a population of 800 who are employees of the telecommunication firms  while the analysis  was based on the 234 returned copies of the questionnaire. Our study revealed that internal attitude survey takes place in the telecommunication firms. Internal attitude survey has a significant positive effect on employees’ altruism, employees’ civic virtue and on employees’ conscientiousness in the telecommunication firms in Nigeria. The study therefore concludes that the use of internal attitude survey as a form of employee involvement in the telecommunication industry in Nigeria enhances employees’ OCB. Having drawn this conclusion, the study therefore recommends that employees’ contributions should be periodically sought through internal attitude surveys.

ABSTRACT

This paper investigated the performance effect of institutional environment on the entrepreneurial pursuit in Nigeria with specific focus on the numbers of aspiring entrepreneurs in Ondo State. Both primary and secondary data were used. The primary data were sourced through self-administered structured questionnaire designed for small scale business owners in Ondo State. Secondary data were sourced from the register provided by the national association of small scale businesses, Ondo State chapter containing the name and traceable address of each registered member. A purposive sampling procedure was used to select a sample of one hundred and twenty (120) respondents from a population of 725 registered members. Data collected were analyzed using Simple Regression Analysis through the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) in order to examine the effect of independent variable (institutional environment) on dependent variable (entrepreneurial pursuit). The result showed that institutional environment has statistical significant effect on the numbers of entrepreneurs aspiring to establish their own enterprises in the state with a P-Value of 0.0000 which is less than 0.01 level of significance. The result of the Simple Regression Analysis showed an overall P-value of 0.0000 and R2 of 0.488 percent which implied that institutional environment has statistical significant effect on entrepreneurial pursuit in the state. The paper concluded that Weak and corrupt government institution is detrimental to long term sustainable entrepreneurial pursuit and inimical to its development and therefore, recommended thata law is passed to impose death sentence on offences relating to corrupt practices to serve as deterrent to others to learn.

ABSTRACT

Soil pollution with heavy metals due to discharge of untreated urban and industrial waste water is a major threat to ecological and human well being. This research was carried out to determine and compare the level of heavy metal uptake (Cr and Pb) of Amaranthuscaudatus planted on contaminated soil. A 6kg of soil was contaminated with 20g of Pb(NO3)2 which contains 12.51g of Pb and 20g of K2Cr2O7 which contains 7.07g of Cr. Amaranthuscaudatus was planted on this contaminated soil. Germination begins after 2 days of plantation but for Cr there was no germination. In soil contaminated with Pb, growth continuous for 50 days under. A similar trend was carried out for the uncontaminated soil which also germinates after 2 days of plantation.   The result shows that Cr was toxic to germination and it affects the germination process of Amaranthuscaudatus which did not germinate entirely. The level of heavy metals in the soil and vegetable was determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) analysis. Transfer Factor (TF) from the soil to the plant was also determined. This result shows a large percentage of the heavy metals absorbed by the plant from the soil. The result also shows that Amaranthuscaudatus has the ability to phytoremediate to a very small extent.

ABSTRACT

Erhiemu soil sample was collected and extracted, asphaltenes were then precipitated from the extracts. The asphaltenes were subjected to hydropyrolysis to determine the percentage yield of hydrocarbon from asphaltene matrix. Open column chromatography was performed on asphaltene hydropyrolysate which gave a percentage recovery of 71%. This suggests that the process is a veritable tool for the release of bound hydrocarbons in asphaltene matrix.

ABSTRACT

This study describes the approach of Gaussian Naïve Bayes (GNB) as a prior distribution classifier in a two-class (dichotomous) classification of the posterior probability of the dependent variable in a Bayesian logistic regression.   This approach establishes the procedure for parameter estimation of Bayesian logistic regression when we could not ascertained whether the prior distribution is informative or non-informative. The Newton-Raphson iterative procedure was used in estimating the vector parameters because there was no closed-form solution due to non-linearity of the logistic function. This study was applied to four set of panaceas drugs on diarrhea treatment for babies less than a year old (Nigeria Demographic Health Survey (NDHS, 2013)). It was noted that the standard errors of parameters estimated via Bayesian logistic regression using the GNB were lower than that of standard errors of parameters estimated via the Classical Logistic Regression (CLR) using the Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE), which makes Bayesian logistic regression via GNB better than CLR.

ABSTRACT

This paper highlights the impact of noise on diagnostic image quality and the methods used to de-noise the images for improved quality and better clinical diagnosis. The various types of noise sequences interfering with the diagnostic image especially, the Gaussian white noise was discussed. Since the first two moments of a normally distributed process is sufficient to characterize it completely, the mean and variance of higher powers of the linear Gaussian white noise process  were determined. The results show that for fixed s, increase in power of the process leads to increase in variance. As noise production is inherent in the modality for the image acquisition, and against the backdrop that repeat studies have some unpalatable economic, health and social consequences, we recommend that health managers should rather, go for equipments with high signal to noise ratio when procuring medical imaging equipments and should at all times hire the services of quality assurance personnel.

ABSTRACT

The damaging effects of lead poisoning to various organs of the body have been severally reported; as well as the health complications they produce. There are however relatively few reports on the nature of such effects on body tissues- histology, most publications have rather addressed the resulting complications. The proper understanding of the nature of the effects of lead poisoning on body tissues could help in understating the cause of the complications and may provide insights into better ways of managing lead poisoning effects. This research investigated the effects of lead poisoning on a number of vital body tissues histology. Twelve Wistar rats were distributed into two groups: Group A being the control and Group B was administered 50mg/kg body weight of lead-in-water for a period of 28 days that the experiment lasted. The tissues were excised, fixed in formal saline and processed using the routine Haematoxylin and Eosin staining technique. Photomicrographs were obtained and analysed critically using qualitative histological principles. Lead produced observable deleterious effects on all tissues tested, the extent however vary greatly: from its extensively disruptive effects on the kidney tissues. Kidney glomeruli tubules were morphologically distorted while tubular cells show signs of assault and morphological distortions. Testis histo-architecture and epididymis epithelium were also disrupted. The spleen pulps, especially white, show sign of damage while bone marrow cells are fewer in the lead intoxicated group. Liver cells and alveolar epithelium showed signs of damage; Lead poisoning effects was observed in all the tissues.
