ABSTRACT

Workmen compensation is a policy affected by an employer on the employee in an organization which provides cover for financial benefits in respect of injuries, permanent or temporary disability or death of employees that arises during the course of work. Equitable compensation provided for the employee as a benefit will definitely increase the productivity of the organization and also there is possibility for such company to achieve its selective goals and objectives. Recently, companies do not comply to rules and laws by not effecting this policy on their workers. It is in this line that the research work aims at analyzing the effect of workmen compensation insurance on the employee performance of manufacturing companies in Nigeria.  The study was carried out with 297 out of the 346 questionnaires that were administered and distributed to the staff of the manufacturing companies in Agbara, Ogun state. Data collected was analyzed, using STATA 10 data analysis statistical package to examine how workmen compensation policy affects the employee’s performance in manufacturing companies. Factor analysis was employed to make the regression analysis possible. The result of the analysis at 5 % level of significance (p < 0.000) shows that workmen compensation policy has significant and positive effect on employee performance, which will eventually increase the overall performance, productivity and outputs of manufacturing companies. Workmen compensation was also found to be a source of morale to workers in order to perform effectively and efficiently. To this end, it is recommended that manufacturing companies operating in Nigeria, should ensure that their companies’ boards of directors comply with the employers’ liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 2004 as well as other statutes and also make sure all employees are insured by obtaining workmen compensation insurance policy.

ABSTRACT

This study examined the effects of compensation plan on employee performance in the telecommunication industry of MTN and Glo Nigerian, Umuahia. The research adopted the survey research design, using simple random sampling techniques, descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. A total number of eighty-eight (88) questionnaires were issued out by the researcher to the staff of MTN and GLO network providers. 17 respondents representing 21.3% strongly agreed that Prompt payment of salaries has influenced employee performance in the telecommunication industry’s, 42 respondents representing 52.5% agreed the same, 7 respondents were undecided, 10 respondents disagreed, while 6 respondents strongly disagreed that the development of the enterprises has increased their access to credit from financial institutions. Also 18 respondents representing 22.5% strongly agreed that Commission has impacted employee productivity in the telecommunication industry, 35 respondents representing 43.8% agreed the same, 9 respondents were undecided, 3 respondents disagreed, while 15 respondents strongly disagreed that Commission has impacted employee productivity in the telecommunication industry. From the regression analysis, the coefficient of bonus and salary are positive and significant at 1%. The p-values of bonus and salary is 0.0064 and 0.0000 is less than the t-statistic value of 2.799 and 9.084 and  the standard error value of 0.0785 and 0.0782 is less than the t-statistic value respectively. The adjusted R2 0.67 or 67% which revealed that the variables in the equation jointly explained 67% of the variations in the equation while the remaining 33% is explained by other variables not included in the equation.  In other words, the R-square value of 67%  expresses the percentage effect of remuneration dimension on employees’ performance jointly explained by salaries/wages and bonus/incentives on employees performance. Therefore, the findings indicate that, (i) Prompt payment of salaries has no significant effect on employee performance in the telecommunication industry. (ii) Commission has no significant effect on employee’s level of satisfaction in the telecommunication industry.

ABSTRACT

One hundred and ninety five (195) unsexed Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) of uniform weight were randomly allotted to five dietary treatments comprising of 0%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% inclusion levels of FMKCM for T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5 respectively. Each treatment was replicated thrice with thirteen (13) birds per replicate. The quails were fed the experimental diet over a period of four (4) weeks. Feed intake was measured daily and the quails were weighed once weekly. Mean daily feed intake of quail fed  FMKCM was significantly (P<0.05) higher in 0% and 10% level than quail fed 15%, 20% and 25% FMKCM. In terms of Mean final body weight, mean daily weight gain and efficiency of feed utilization, there were no signification (P>0.05) difference across the treatments. The findings suggested that FMKCM could replace maize up to25% level in growing Japanese quail’s diet without deleterious effect on growth indices.

ABSTRACT

The study examines level of adoption of NERICA 1 rice among farmers in Gombe State. Multi-stage sampling technique was used to determine the sample for the study. Primary data was collected through the use of structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics such as percentage, minimum, maximum, means, standard deviation and adoption index was used to achieve objectives of this study. The mean age, years of schooling and farming experiences of respondents were 37.8 years, 11.9 years and 14.5 years respectively. Sex shows that 90.2% are males’ farmers and 81.1% are membership of cooperative with average household size of 8 persons and farm size of 1.5 ha. The respondents access minimum of N10, 000 credits and have maximum household income of N500, 000 with a mean output of 2189.8 Kg/ha. It is concluded that majority of the respondents are male, literate, married with moderate household size and young. The level of adoption of NERICA 1 rice technologies in the study areas was found to be low hence it is recommended that Government at all levels, private sectors and NGOs should motivate youth to sustain the cooperative spirit and create awareness to the farmers through seminars and workshop on the importance of women involvement in farming activities, also, private investors, NGOs and Governments should collaborates and supply farm inputs such as certified NERICA 1 seeds, fertilizer, pesticides, herbicides, planters, weeders and harvesters fabricated by research institutes to reduce drudgery which mostly deter farmers from full adoption of promoted technologies (NERICA 1 rice).

ABSTRACT

A Study on carcass and organ characteristics of Japanese quails fed fermented mango kernel composite (FMKCM) was carried out using complete randomized design (CRD). One hundred and ninety five (195) unsexed Japanese quails were randomly allotted to five dietary treatments comprising of 0%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% inclusion levels of fermented mango kernel composite meal for T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5 respectively. Each treatment was replicated thrice with thirteen (13) birds per replicate. The result of this study showed that there were no significant differences (P>0.005) across treatments with respect to meat yield and meat distributions among carcass cut-off parts. In terms of organ weights, significant difference (P<0.05) were observed in the heart and spleen weights, however, the result did not follow a regular pattern implying that, treatments would not have accounted for these differences. It is therefore concluded that, fermented mango kernel composite meal could be used up to 25% in the diets of Japanese quails without compromising the carcass and organ weights.

ABSTRACT

Religion unites, binds, gives hope and saves, but in its diverse forms when incorrectly indoctrinated and misapplied divides, disintegrates, and destroys. Therefore its application has both positive and negative impact on life. However, the right practice of religion and religious freedom, as genuine freedom of conscience, and the virtues of ethics and morality are keys to positive social-cultural transformation as symmetrical activity synonymous with core human values for the progress and building of nations. It is not uncommon to agree with scientific researches that there is high propensity for positive transformational relationship between religious freedom, ethical values and moral education on one hand, and socio-economic, political, cultural and mental advancement of peoples, on the other. Religion, ethics and religious freedom are divine sciences designed to enhance attitudinal and moral change, and when appropriately taught, imbibed and applied, have tangible and positive impact on the mission of industrialization.

Drawing conclusions from the inevitable relationship between religious freedom, ethical values, moral education and social change, the questions to be answered include, inter alia, what is the connection between religious beliefs, freedom, Christian ethical values, and socio-economic development and good governance in a democratic society? Can religion and its ethical values agree with technological advancements and the rush for unhealthy competitions inherent in human nature? How could religious freedom, Christian ethics and moral education influence economic equitability, political stability and sustainable development in the face of corruption, as in the case of Nigeria, for example? What ethical questions control the production of technologies that waste resources in the process of competitive struggles and those that conserve energy, resources and general wellbeing of societies? Yet, how could religious freedom, ethics and moral education impact positively on science and technology as concrete values for human capacity building and national development?

This paper seeks to respond to these questions and to survey and expound the concept of religious freedom, Christian ethical values and moral education to bear on sustainable development, social, political and cultural transformation of concrete living States for the promotion, protection and enhancement of the quality of lives and property of citizens in an industrial age.
