CORRELATIONAL ANALYSIS BETWEEN PROFICIENCY IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND STUDENTS’ PERFORMANCE IN SCIENCE SUBJECTS AMONG STUDENTS IN FEDERAL COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, YOLA

ABSTRACT

This study carried out an correlational analysis between proficiency in English and students performance in science subjects among FCE Yola students. The study was based on survey research design. The study area was Federal College of Education, Yola. The study sampled 160 NCE II science students in 2018/2019 academic season. Thus, the students were sampled at rate of 40 students from Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Physics department respectively. The study was based on performance of students in their core course subjects, and their proficiency in English language for 2018/2019 academic season.  The data collected were analysed using Pearson product moment correlation (PPMC) at 0.05 significant level. The study found a strong relationship between English language proficiency of students and their academic performance in mathematics, chemistry, biology and physics respectively. The study concluded that the initial assumption that science students require little English language is not hold. Therefore, the study recommended for making English language a requirement for admission in science courses as well as introduction of special purpose English for science students.

CONCEPT MAPPING TEACHING STRATEGY ON STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT IN BASIC SCIENCE

ABSTRACT

The study investigated the effect of concept mapping teaching strategy on students’ achievement and retention in Basic Science in Imo State. The subjects in the experimental group were taught Heat Transfer concepts using the Concept Mapping teaching strategy and their achievement and retention abilities were compared with that of the control group who were taught same concepts using lecture method. Pretest, posttest and postpose test data were analyzed to determine the group equivalence, achievement and retention abilities of the students in the experimental and the control groups. Three research questions were answered and three hypotheses were tested using t-test statistics ofP-value 0.05 and the following major findings were made: Students exposed to Concept Mapping teaching strategy i.e. (Experimental group) achieved significantly higher than their counterparts taught using lecture method. Students exposed to Concept Mapping instructional strategy retained the learnt concepts significantly better than their counterparts exposed to lecture instructional strategy; there was no significant difference in academic achievement between the male and female students exposed to Concept Mapping and lecture instructional strategies. Form the findings, some recommendations were made, one of which is that teachers of Basic science should use Concept Mapping instructional strategy in their teaching as it enhances achievement and retention among JSS3 students.

TEACHER FACTORS AS PREDICTOR OF STUDENTS PERFORMANCE IN SOCIAL STUDIES IN NOMADIC SCHOOLS IN NORTH EASTERN STATES OF NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

Social studies is essential for our daily life and plays a crucial role in school curricula, especially in the nomadic education; yet pupils’ performance in the subject remain very low especially in the north eastern Nigeria. This study intended to find out whether teacher characteristics, teaching competency, teacher workload and teachers’ attitudes towards Social studies affect nomadic pupils’ performance in Social studies or not. The study adopted research survey design. The study was conducted in six states of north eastern Nigeria, which has a total of 171 nomadic schools with a population of 326 Social studies teachers. The sampled size was 132 teachers across sixty nomadic schools selected randomly at rate of 10 schools per state. The study used structured questionnaire for data collection. Descriptive statistics was used to analyse data collected. The study found that teachers’ background characteristics influence performance of pupils in Social studies. Also, the performance in social studies was significantly influenced by the teacher’s competency. Also, the rates at which the teachers are being loaded with works negatively affect academic performance of students in social studies. Also, the attitude of Social studies teachers influence pupils academic performance. The study recommends that the recruitment of Social studies teachers should be based on the qualification, while those in the system should be sponsored for further studies.

MULTIVARIATE ANALYSIS: A VERITABLE TOOL FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF MARKET PRICES OF ORDINARY SHARES

ABSTRACT

This research was carried out to investigate the significant difference between the mean share prices of the two banks (UBA and FCMB) and to determine which of the two banks is more likely to attract investors. The target population includes the fifteen (15) banks quoted in the Guardian Newspaper market report of the Nigeria Stock Exchange of shares publications from (January 2018 – June 2018). Samples of two banks were selected by the method of simple random sampling without replacement. The data was collected on weekly basis for Twenty-four (24) consecutive weeks from the weekly publication of the Guardian Newspaper market report of the Nigeria Stock Exchange. The closing stock for each week of the two selected bank was taken and recorded for the research. The null hypothesis Ho: there is no significant difference between the mean shares prices of both banks, was tested as against the alternative hypothesis. H1: there is a significant difference between the mean shares prices of both banks. Hoteling’s T-squared test statistic was employed in the analysis/hypothesis testing. The findings indicated a significant difference between the mean share prices of FCMB and UBA. F-calculated 42.48 and Ftab 2.22(0.05) = 3.44. Ho was rejected while H1 was accepted. Also the 95% confidence interval calculated show that the true mean of UBA is higher than that of FCMB. Thus, UBA shares tend to yield more profit.

JOBSATISFACTION, SELF-CONTROL AND COUNTERPRODUCTIVE WORK BEHAVIOUR AMONG FACULTY MEMBERS

ABSTRACT

Drawing from social exchange theory and general theory of self-control, this paper examined the impact of job satisfaction and self-control on counterproductive behaviour among faculty members in Nigerian higher educational institutions(HEIs). Cluster sampling technique was employed and 342 filled questionnaires were returned.Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used for data analysis. The results indicate that faculty members who experience job satisfaction may engage less in counterproductive behaviour. Further, results demonstrate that self-control is negatively related to counterproductive work behaviour. This paper recommends the need to consider self-control as one of the personality traits when hiring new faculty members and the need for management of public HEIs to provide a good work environment and resources/incentives that may promote a feeling of job satisfaction among faculty members. In conclusion, this paper adds to existing knowledge on counterproductive behaviour by considering a personal trait that may minimize lecturers’ involvement in workplace deviance. Implications, limitations of the study and directions for future research are discussed.

CONSUMERS’ UNDERSTANDING AND INTERPRETATION OF THE NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION ON PRODUCT PACKAGES: THE IMPLICATIONS ON ADVERTISING(A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF BOURNVITA AND MILO BEVERAGES)

ABSTRACT

This research is predicated on consumers’ understanding and interpretation of the nutritional information on product packages and the implications this has on its advertising, a comparative study of Bournvita and Milo beverages. The problems that necessitated this research among others include lack of notice of the claims, misunderstanding of their meaning, the implications that the understanding and interpretation may have on product advertising and lack of using it or trust in the claims. The research methodology used for this work is descriptive research design. A total of 150 customers were considered for this study. Both primary and secondary data were used; the secondary data was sourced from books and previous work similar to this while primary data was obtained from questionnaires administered to customers of the two beverages brand. The findings revealed that when products are advertised, consumers read the labels and understand them before choosing and using the products.  Nutritional claims influence consumers’ choice of their products and lack of comprehension of nutritional information about products renders product advertising ineffective and eventually affects consumer purchases. In conclusion, consumers are very much aware of the concept of nutrition and nutritional labelling. However, it is recommended that nutritional information must be presented in a format that can be easily understood by the consumers.  Food and beverages industry must recognize its role in informing consumers (advertising) about the nutritional profile of food products; and should provide clear and consistent nutritional information on food labels. Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) should also ensure that product packages carry all the necessary details to guarantee the effectiveness of their advertising jobs and while complying with government regulations, a number of factors, such as allowing easier access to nutritional information and the implications on advertising, should be taken into consideration when providing nutritional information on food products.

THE EFFECT OF SOCIO-CULTURAL VARIABLES ON CONSUMER PATRONAGE OF HONEYWELL PRODUCTS IN ILARO, OGUN STATE.

ABSTRACT

The study examined the influence of socio-cultural variables on consumers’ patronage of edible products from the stable of Honeywell Nig. Ltd in Ilaro, Ogun State. The objective of the study was basically to ascertain the significant impact of lifestyle, attitude and family size on consumer patronage of Honeywell edible products. The study adopted a descriptive research design owing to the fact that the researchers intend to compare consumers’ attitudinal behaviors. The population of the study comprised of distributors and the entire customers of the company’s products in Ilaro, Ogun State. Stratified random sampling technique was used through the administration of questionnaire to some selected households and personal interviews to selected distributors.(20 retailers cum distributors and 80 households (majorly lecturers, teachers and Dangote workers)to arrive at the sample for the study. Analysis was done using simple linear regression with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS v 20). With the P- value of the three hypotheses tested with a maximum 0.007 which is lower than a at 5% level of significance; it clearly showed that socio- cultural variables (lifestyle, attitude and family size) significantly influence consumer patronage of Honeywell edible products in the locality under review. Therefore, the study recommended that marketing managers should stimulate opinions of leadership in some key members of the family, take cognizance of people’s culture and ensure that their products are of good quality so as to protect their goodwill and thereby attracting greater patronage.

SYNTHESIS OF STRUVITE USING (XRF):X-RAY FLUORESCENT SPECTROMETER: POTENTIAL WASTE-DERIVED FERTILIZER

ABSTRACT          

Struvite is a phosphate fertilizer, although it contains a significant amount of nitrogen and magnesium, and it is an effective alternative source of rock phosphate to maintain the agricultural production system. The present review deals with the principles and concept of Struvite formation, crystal growth, elemental contents, pHvalues. Struvite precipitation occurs in an equimolecular concentration of Mg2+, NH4 and PO4 at slightly alkaline conditions. Addition of a source of Mg is essential to maintain the favorable condition of PO4 and Mg. Different factors such as Mg: PO4, pH, as well as P and N efficiencies were also discussed. The slower nutrient leaching loss and its fertilizer quality make Struvite an eco-friendly fertilizer. It is possible to overcome the acute shortage of rock phosphate. Struvite can be beneficial, in the sense that it can be used as fertilizer. It provides a good source of phosphorus, Nitrogen and Magnesium for plant growth, Struvite is also economic feasible to be used as fertilizer, due to the anticipated global scarcity of phosphorus reserves. Struvite when used as fertilizer, it does not harm the intake or rooting system of the plants.it can be used in making ornaments, grazing activities, and can be applied on orchards and plants on pots. In addition Struvite when applied once in a growing season it has a low rates of leaching compared to other fertilizers, meanwhile, the rates at which nutrients are released too differs with other conventional fertilizers.

AETIOLOGY OF FUNGAL DISEASES OF SWEET POTATO (Ipomoea batatas (L)) DURING POST HARVEST STORAGE IN OFFA KWARA STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L)) is the traditional food of Offa people of Kwara State but is recently observed to be in short supply with attendant high cost for some years now. Post-harvest spoilage is found to be a major problem of the tuber. Disease survey on the incidence and severity of the fungal rot on the tuber crops within the locality was carried out. This study was carried out to isolate, identify and confirmed the microorganisms responsible for the post-harvest disease of the crop. Conventional isolation and culture techniques of diseased tissues in nutrient Agar (NA), Malt Extract Agar (MEA) and Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) plates were adopted. Five replicate samples of healthy sweet potatoes were obtained randomly at different time intervals from farms and markets in Offa. They were homogenized and serially diluted to “thin-out” the microbial population. The fungal populations were observed after five days of incubation. The organisms were identified using morphological and biochemical tests. They were confirmed using pathogenicity tests. The isolated fungi are; Aspergillus, Mucor, Fusarivm and Penicillium. Efforts are currently going on to treat the diseases with leaves extracts of some medicinal plants. Data were obtained from disease survey was analysed with ANOVA and means were separated with FLSD.

PROFITABILITY ANALYSIS OF FROZEN FOODS MARKETING IN IKORODU LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF LAGOS STATE

ABSTRACT

This study examined the profitability analysis of frozen foods market in Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos State, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to describe the socio-economic characteristics of frozen foods consumers; know the various level of consumption of different frozen foods; determine the profitability of frozen food market; and identify the problems faced by frozen food marketers in the study area. One hundred and twenty (120) frozen food marketers were selected from villages/towns within the selected Local Government Area through the use of a random sampling technique. The frozen food marketers were interviewed using a well-structured questionnaire. Data collected from the frozen food marketers were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. With respect to socio-economic characteristics of the frozen food marketers, findings showed that majority of the marketers (95.8%) were female, large proportions (61.7%) were in their active years (31-50years), 66.7% were Christians, 70.8% were married. About 87.5% have one form of formal education to the other with an average household size of 8 persons, having trading as their major occupation and having marketing experience ranging from 6-10 years. In line with level of consumption of different frozen foods, majority (73.3%) consumed frozen fish regularly, 74.2% regularly consumed frozen chicken, 71.7% consumed frozen vegetables on regular basis and 70.8% consumed frozen fruits on regularly basis. Therefore, this study is concluded that frozen food marketing is a lucrative business despite the various bottlenecks being faced by the frozen food marketers in the study area. Based on these assertions, it is therefore recommended that improvements in market infrastructure such as storage facilities, cold storage, better road, good electricity etc. would also be helpful in improving the marketing profitability as well as providing solutions to problems associated with high cost of transportation, custom dues, lack of finance among others which were encountered by the frozen food marketers in the study area.
