ABSTRACT

Maize is one of the most important staple food crops in Nigeria.  It is cultivated under a broad range of agro-ecological zones in the country.  Lepidopterous stem borers are the main insect pests that attack maize plant.  This study was conducted atHassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic Katsinato investigate stem borer infestations, damage and economic losses in maize at farmers’ fields.  Observation of stem borer infestation was done in four farms and a total of 2174 maize plants were observed randomly.  All the farms surveyed were infested by stem borer (Chilopartellus) with infestation between 29 – 43 per cent.  Larval feeding was observed on the leaves, growing points, stems and tassels.  Yield assessment indicates 15 per cent loss although this was despite the use of insecticide in the farms surveyed. Further study to provide empirical evidence of the economic status of the stem borer pest in the area is recommended.  Farmers should be informed on the possible measures to minimize the emergence of the adult borers that can assault the new crops in the next cropping seasons.

ABSTRACT

The term sustainable development is a well-used one and is probably familiar to many within and beyond academia, certainly in the more developed parts of the world. It is a term that we come across in arenas ranging from door-step recycling initiatives to media explanations of global security issues. Within human geography, it interrogates research extending from social exclusion within cities of the United Kingdom to outcomes of environmental transformations in rural Africa. Indeed, some consider that there is none so relevant a discipline as geography to contribute to the sustainable development debates given its ability to marry the science of the environment with an understanding of economic, political, and cultural change, that is, development. This paper argues that the pursuit of sustainable development is now stated as a principal policy goal of organizations and institutions across all scales of public life and the field of academic and practical enquiry around sustainable development is a diverse and expanding one. In addition the paper recommends that decision-makers need to be constantly mindful of the relationships, complementarities, and trade-offs among these pillars and ensure responsible human behaviour and actions at the international, national, community and individual levels in order to uphold and promote the tenets of this paradigm in the interest of human development. More needs to be done by the key players particularly the United Nations (UN), governments, private sector, and civil society organizations in terms of policies, education and regulation on social, economic and environmental resource management to ensure that everyone is sustainable development aware, conscious, cultured and compliant.

ABSTRACT

This is a historical research into the origins, customs and traditions of Àgbòyí town, an island settlement situated in Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos state, Nigeria. It is an in-depth study of its origin; its socio-economic and political organisation; and the customary traditions and way of life of its people. Àgbòyí people are predominantly of the Àwórì sub-group of Yoruba. Indigenous religions and festivals are till this day in popular practice among the people who had vowed never to jettison the traditional heritage of theirancestors. Such ancient religionsand festivals include Ògún, Orò, Yemoja, Egúngún, Gèlèdé, Awo Opa (Opa Cult) and the Òsúgbó/Ògbóni Cult). Àgbòyí could be aptly thus be described as an oasis of customs and traditions within the modern metropolitan Lagos. The study observed that the economic activities of the people aredominated by fishing (typical of the natives of riverine settlements) though a number of other traditional crafts also existed. Àgbòyí people enjoy good relations and inter-marriages with their neighbours, and this significantly boosted peace, trade and commerce. The ambience of the water bodies and the peaceful attitude of the people make trading easy, interesting and rewarding for all and sundry, hence, Àgbòyí is also dubbed Ìlú Ajé (town of prosperity). However, the study uncovered that two distinct families,Ògúnloye and Òdòyí have been contending for the soul of Àgbòyí as its first settler and owner. At the time of this research, it remains a matter for litigation awaiting adjudication atthe courts. This paper could however be described as an abridged report of the general findings.

ABSTRACT

The constitutive ambiguities and paradoxical consequences that violent experiences impose on our attempt to understand violence and cope with violence proclaim that it has not been a bed of roses for man. His rare moments of peace and tranquillity have often been shattered by deadly strokes of violence. In order to approach an integrative potentiality of violence, this paper deems it necessary to first investigate phenomenologically the meaning and conceptions of violence as a point of departure. It will concentrate on recovering the subjective motives for violent actions and on understanding the perpetrator’s deviant point of view. It seeks further to investigate and question the justification therein the potentiality or rather the psychological insight into the causes of violence. The possibility of capturing other’s experience to oneself via phenomenological context shall be critically verified. Finally, the conclusion will be drawn by proffering some solutions to the problem in question.

Abstract:

Jama’atual Alhi-sunna Lid Da’awat Wal-Jihad (Boko Haram) started as a normal Islamic religious movement but later transformed itself into radical and militant organization after the 2009 upheaval in Maiduguri. The activities of this group has consumed several lives and properties, affected national and regional security as well as socioeconomic developments. The effort by the Nigerian authorities to halt the advances of the group seems to be fruitless; but instead, the group has become a terrorist organization, operating even beyond the shores of Nigeria. This paper formulates and adopted fallacy theory as a major cause for the unending or lingering terrorism in North-east Nigeria. The paper recommends that speaking the truth by individual and institution; boosting positive chain of communication vertically and horizontally, as well as making pragmatic resolutions base on the factual knowledge acquired are panacea for preventing or ending the Boko Haram terrorism.

ABSTRACT

This research work aimed to produce furfural from Rice husk and Groundnut shell and compare the effect of acid concentration on the yield of furfural produced which are lignocellulosic biomass consisting of pentosan which undergoes acid hydrolysis to yield furfural. The effect of acid concentration on the yield was investigated. The optimum furfural yield obtained was 9.48% and 36.78% for Groundnut-shell and Rice Husk respectively at 7.5% acid concentration. Thus it is concluded that the most favorable Sulphuric acid concentration for furfural yield is 7.5%, and that Rice husk shows a high optimum increase in % furfural yield than Groundnut-shell. Also the furfural obtained was characterized using FTIR and GC-MS spectroscopic techniques. The IR spectrum observed exhibited a very strong absorption at 1669 cm-1 indicating the presence of the conjugated carbonyl (C=O) group. The presence of the aldehyde was proven by two peaks at 3134 cm-1 and 2812 cm-1. Also the result of the Gas chromatography-Mass spectrophotometer was in agreement with the target molecule (Furfural) for which the observed molecular weight and the empirical formula was 96.05 g/mole and C5H4O2 respectively.
