The study examined the welfare and household food consumption among households in Egba division of Ogun State, Nigeria with a view to providing policy information towards improving welfare condition of the Egbas, using a well-structured questionnaire and sample size of 130 households. Standard welfare function was specified and estimated using Ordinary Least Square Regression. The study revealed that the monthly per capital income of the household is N9,623.27 while the monthly per capital food and non food expenditure was N5,949.7 and N1,768.25respectively. Similarly, with respect to household welfare, household income, education and household size have significant impact on food expenditure. The result indicated that as household income increases, household tends to expend more and more on food consumption. On the basis of this finding, it was recommended that appropriate and effective policies which will reduce household size, increase household income and improve their education level should be put in place

Primary data were collected from a total of 100 tomato marketers using multistage sampling technique. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, gross margin analysis and multiple regression analysis. The study revealed that the mean age of tomato marketers was 43 years and that tomato marketing was female-dominated. The cost and return analysis showed that tomato marketing in Ile-Ife, Osun State is marginally profitable. The result also revealed marital status, household size, marketing experience, selling price and transportation costs as the factors influencing gross margin of tomato marketers.  ABSTRACT

Nematode pests in Katsina state have not been widely studied.  Information on the occurrence and distribution of these pests in various irrigation sites in the state is scanty.  This study investigated the geographical distribution and population density of nematodes associated with some irrigation sites in the state.  Ten irrigation sites across the state were surveyed in consultation with the Department of Irrigation in the Ministry of Agriculture and natural Resources, Katsina State.  Five composite soil samples were taken at different crop fields in each of the irrigation sites.  Extraction of nematodes from the samples was done using modified sieving and decanting techniques as described by Coyne et al. Analysis of the samples revealed 23 genera of plant parasitic nematodes.  The most prominent nematodes found in all the samples collected from the irrigation sites were: Rotylenchus, Tylenchus, Pratylenchus, Scutellonema, Aphelenchus, Aphelenchoides, Meloidogyne, Hoplolaimus, and paratylenchus.  While Telotylenchus, Belonolaimus, Ditylenchus, Heterodera, Longidorus, and Criconemoides occurred in very low numbers.  The study indicated a widespread distribution of important plant-parasitic nematodes in the irrigation sites.  The major nematodes identified in this study portend serious implications on profitable production of crop in the irrigation sites, because these nematodes are known to be damaging to crops.  Enlightenment programme for the farmers in the irrigation site should therefore be embarked upon by the proper agencies to inform them of the presence of plant-parasitic nematodes in their crop fields and the implications.

ABSTRACT

An experiment was conducted to investigate the replacement of maize with Ziziphus mauritiana fruit meal in broiler finisher diets. One hundred and twenty Anak 2000 broilers were used for the study four diets were formulated using ZMFM at 0%, 5%, 10% and 15% in the diets respectively the birds were randomly allotted to dietary treatments in a completely randomized design. Each treatment consult of thirty birds with ten birds per replicate. The experiment lasted for four weeks. Feed and water were given ad-libitum. The Haematological indices indicates high significant (P<0.05) difference at different levels of maize replacement with ZMFM in packed cell volume (PCV), Red blood cell (RBC) Haemaglobin (Hb) while blood cell (WBC), mean corpuscular Haemaglobin (MCH) Haemoglobin concentration (HB)Heterophils and Lymphocytes. The serum biochemical indices revealed high significant (P<0.05) difference in total protein, albumen, glucose, chloride, potassium and sodium. In view of above, up to 15% replacement of maize with Ziziphus mauritiana fruit meal has no adverse effect on the blood component of broiler finisher chicken.

ABSTRACT

The study was designed to evaluate extension technology packages meant for rice production with the aim of assessing the rice production in Ogoja L.G.A. To identify various improved rice production packages recommended to farmers in the area, to determine methods of delivery to farmers adopted by extension assess degree of improved farmers to the rice production packages, to determine the effect of extension recommendations on rice production and identify variables influencing adoption of extension rice production programmes. Data was collected from 90 sampled rice farmers and 15 extension agents with the aid of semi-structured questionnaire. Analysis of data was done using percentages, frequencies and Chi-square statistics. The result shows lack of incentives, inadequate funding and irregular visitation which brought more serious constraints to the rice farmer. There is no significant relationship between improved technology packages and selected variable like (degree of extension contacts and farm size). Adoption of improved technology package is not significantly related to the level of education age and family size of the farmer. The adoption of improved technology package depends significantly on the source of information. Finally, it was recommended that the programme should be well funded and extension agents enlightened more on how to handle new programmes for better acceptance by rural farmers.

ABSTRACT

Livestock is a critical element in livelihoods, income generation, food security and agricultural development of Gedarif state of Sudan. This paper attempts to shed light on the role of livestock in the economy of the state. The study relies heavily on secondary data. It finds that Livestock plays an important role in the state’s economy and in the welfare of the people. Livestock production is the second major economic activity in the state after agriculture and it provides a mean for risk management during drought and crop failure period. Livestock sector is faced by different problems such as diseases, difficulty in access to finance by producers and inadequate services. It is recommended that veterinary services, livestock breed and natural pastures for grazing should be improved and studies on the economics of livestock and livelihoods should be conducted. Demarcation of migration routes, reduction of taxes, training of pastoralists and other stakeholders and provision of water for animals and households are very important for improving livestock production.

ABSTRACT

This study examined the impact of exchange rate on the performance of manufacturing sector in Nigeria within the period of 2000 to 2018. Secondary source and time series data were gathered from the CBN Statistical Bulletin of 2018. The use of Ordinary Least Square was most appropriate for the study in terms of goodness of fit and significance of regression coefficient. Multiple regression of an econometric model was formulated for this study to examine the relationship between the independent variables exchange rate, interest rate and inflation rate and the dependent variable manufacturing output. The result was facilitated using Econometric view version 9. The result of the analysis shows that interest rate and inflation rate are statistically insignificant to explain manufacturing output while exchange rate is statistically significance to determine manufacturing output in Nigeria. The f statistics result reveals a probability value of 0.024 which is less than 5% level of significance, it can be concluded that exchange rate has a significant impact on the performance of manufacturing sector in Nigeria. The study therefore recommends that government should encourage the locally made products in Nigeria by removing the export duties in order to increase exportation of Nigeria products and increase import duties rate to reduce the patronage of external made products.
