ABSTRACT

Cattle like other creatures require water supply for survival. The shortage of water supply for cattle in Mubi cattle market is a thing of concern for all and sundry. This inadequate water supply in the cattle market apart from directly affecting the health of the animals, it also affects the cattle marketers from economic standpoint. Instead of relying on the supply of water by water tankers and truck pushers, this paper attempts to design a solar-powered water pumping system for cattle watering in the market. The average daily water requirement by the cattle is obtained from daily number of cows in the market for two years. A deep well jack pump with 75-volt dc motor is used. The worksheet employed in this design reveals that an average pumping rate of 2405 1litres/hr of water can be produced by71 Modules of 917 Watts. This technology can go a long way in addressing the inadequate water supply in the cattle market and in any other cattle market having similar problem.

TERRITORIAL SOVEREIGNTY AND RIGHTS OF MIGRANTS

ABSTRACT

This paper considers territorial sovereignty (and of course its border management) from a human rights perspective. It demonstrates how  a preoccupation with border zones have expanded, border crossing has become a more stigmatized and dangerous activity, and even as globalization has given rise to easier and faster international travel, for some, movement has been outlawed and stigmatized. Measures taken by some territories to strengthen and secure borders have paradoxically made migrants, more at risk of violence and exploitation by territorial actors. This paper argues that if capitals, information and ideas should flow across borders the same should be applied to the free movement of people. Secondly, there should be no gap between the rights of the migrants (foreigners) and the citizens of the territory. Finally, since this gap between the principle of territorial sovereignty, and the reality of individual lives, underscores the vulnerability of migrants in terms of dignity and human rights; this paper argues that a human right-based approached to such regimes is urgently needed, in order to address growing human rights crises among the migrants.

EXPLORING THE POTENTIALS OF COMPUTER IN ADVANCING HIGHER EDUCATION IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

Electronic technology has brought about the emergence of computer which has the potential of fostering education in human society. Advancement in higher education is a means of ensuring sustainable development in Nigeria. The focus of the paper is that computer can serve as an electronic device that can be used to advance higher education in Nigeria. Issues discussed in the paper were higher education in Nigeria, computer and its technological value, and relevance of computer in uplifting higher education in Nigeria. The paper explained that computer has the potential to enhance higher education because it can be utilized to: improved productivity, promote quality education, store information and records, secure life and properties. Certain recommendations were made to encourage the use of computer for advancement of higher education needed for development in Nigeria.

THE MEDIATING ROLE OF STRESS TOLERANCE BETWEEN WORK STRESS MANAGEMENT AND EMPLOYEE SERVICE DELIVERY AMONG HEALTH WORKERS OF FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTER MAKURDI, BENUE STATE-NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The study was conducted on the mediating role of stress tolerance between work stress management and employee service delivery among employees of Federal Medical Centre Makurdi Benue State. The population of the study comprised all medical staff of FMC Makurdi, comprising medical Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists and Laboratory Scientists who sum up to a total population of 1, 214. The sample of 300 was selected from the target population: 29 medical Doctors, 18 Laboratory Scientists, 231 Nurses and 22 Pharmacists. Four instruments were used for data collection: work stress scale (alpa=0.86), stress management scale (Alpha =0.90)stress tolerance scale (Alpha =0.76) and employee service delivery scale (Alpha =0.83).  Linear regression and path analyses were for data analysis. Results of regression showed that stress management has significant effect on employee service delivery; employee service delivery is significantly predicted by work stress management (.175**, p≤.01), stress tolerance (.158**, p≤.01) and the mediating role of stress tolerance in the effect of work stress management on employee service delivery (.153**, p≤.01). Path Analysis showed that direct effect from work stress management to employee service delivery was 0.158, the strength of the indirect effect was 0.238. The strength of the indirect effect being higher than that of the direct effect confirming that the effect of stress management on employee service delivery is better enhanced through stress tolerance. The strength of the total effect was 0.396.The mediator effect was significant hence stress tolerance is a partial mediator in the effect of work stress management on employee service delivery among employees of Federal Medical Centre Makurdi. The study recommended that the apart from stress management techniques  management techniques such providing platforms for  positive working attitude, being assertive instead of aggressive, as well as learning and practicing relaxation techniques (therefore recreational activities), Medical institutions should also inculcate stress tolerance techniques such as promoting staff resourcefulness/optimistic disposition towards new experiences or towards change in general, being able to come up with suitable methods, knowing what to do and how to do it, , and toward own ability to successfully overcome the specific problem at hand.

ABSTRACT

Rig was developed for Universal testing machine of model SF 300-2041 installed at department of Agricultural and Bio-System Engineering, University of Ilorin to compressed and eject Sorghum Stover and Moringa shell grinds. The Rig consists of Pistons, Cylinder, Ejection unit and Base Plate. The Rig was tested using Sorghum stover grind and Moringa shell grinds on the UTM. The results of the test obtained from using the developed Rig on the universal Testing Machine are as follows: Modulus of Elasticity of 175.558n/mm2 and 97.510N/mm2 for Sorghum Stover and Moringa shell grinds respectively. The maximum Force at break for ejection was obtained to be 15.50N and 476.33 for Sorghum Stover and Moringa shell grind respectively.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to identify restaurant social media marketing practices by comparing the challenges and benefits of Facebook and twitter as platforms of social media in marketing of hospitality products and services. After reviewing relevant literature, multiple-case study design was used, and qualitative data was obtained from the respondents using structured interviews. Purposive sampling was adopted for sampling both the restaurants and the respondents. The data collected from the respondents was arranged and analysed based on restaurant and questions asked. The study revealed that casual and quick service categories of restaurants pay significant attention to Facebook, while full service and take-out service categories have multiple with Facebook and Twitter as their priority. The study suggests that qualitative and quantitative approaches should be used to include other hospitality sectors for more varied information regarding the effective use of the social media marketing.

ABSTRACT

This research focused on the application of computer in auditing financial records with particular reference to artificial intelligence as a decision support aid for achieving specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely auditing result. We proposed machine learning to automatically coding account entries. Data necessary for auditing process are accessed by the machine and it learning by themselves then generate result to support the auditor decision. The auditing report was generated by verifying variable required for auditing through fast iterative processing and intelligent algorithm to access compliances with the finance rules of the organization.

SOLAR ENERGY IN NIGERIAN BUILDINGS: A PATHWAY TO ENERGY EFFICIENCY

ABSTRACT

Due to the increase in living standard and demand, energy conservation has become important in industrialized and developing countries. In respect to rational use of energy, this paper evaluates solar energy in Nigerian buildings with the aid of passive and active solar architecture approaches which makes use of specific building design principles and reduces the artificial energy requirements for achieving indoor thermal comfort. As a climate responsive architecture, building design criteria has been studied with the help of several parameters like geographic location and climatic conditions, building shape, orientation, selection of construction materials, building openings viz. windows, selection of suitable sunshades, etc. All the salient building design parameters are studied and important findings and recommendations are suggested as the outcome of the study. In our quest for sustainable development and the achievement of a safe environment, numerous alternatives to power supply have been exploited. The challenge of erratic and insufficient power has for decades bedeviled our dear nation resulting in the proliferation of the use of generators in multiple locations within the built environment. This solution apparently is the people’s response to the nations decaying infrastructure but invariably produces an environment which is unsafe to its inhabitants. In recent times, reports have shown that the emissions arising from this practice have caused the death of occupants. It is common knowledge that the use of solar energy as an alternative power source is not yet ubiquitous in this country. In recent times, innovation in the area of thermal solar and photovoltaic provides possibilities of its introduction in the building fenestration and facade. This study however examines some existing solar powered facilities in Nigeria.  The study is useful for various resource persons involved in construction activities for designing energy efficient buildings.

EFFICIENCY OF ORDINARY LEAST SQUARES IN REGRESSION MODELS WITH AUTOCORRELATED DISTURBANCES IN A CLASSICAL LINEAR STATISTICAL MODEL.

ABSTRACT

The illustrative values of the asymptotic efficiency for the selected values of ρ and λ shows that, when ρ and λ are both positive, it is clear, that ρ is the dominant parameter. Efficiency declines from 90 percent to about, 10 percent as ρ rises from 0.2 to 0.9, with variations in λ having relatively minor effect. The diagonal entries are equal to those in the first row of table (2) since if λ = 0 or if ρ = λ, the efficiency measure simplified to (1 – ρ2)/(1 + ρ2). Looking at the left hand side of the table, the efficiencies are symmetrical across the first row where the xt series are random. The remaining rows show that λ now exerts a much stronger effect and that the combination of a positive λ and negative ρ can moderate the dramatic declines in efficiency shown in the right – hand side of the table. These calculations are of course, only illustrative, but, they indicate the possibility of a serious loss in efficiency if Ordinary Least Squares is applied in the context of autocorrelated disturbances.

DESIGN OF A PORTABLE TUBULAR FILTER PIPE FOR BOREHOLE WATER PURIFICATION SYSTEM

ABSTRACT

The aim of this work is to design a portable tubular filter pipe for borehole water purification system. The materials used in the portable tubular filter pipe (sand layer depth of 0.15m of size 0.8 – 2mm and coarse gravel layer of 0.02m of size 5-8mm) were sourced locally. The coarse aggregate (gravel) layer served as support and distribution of water while the sand layer served as the filter medium. The diameter of the portable tubular filter pipe was assumed to take 4 inches PVC diameter pipe (0.1016m). The design reveals that the filter area is 0.0479m2, the flowrate in the filter is 8 X 10-5m3/s, the filter volume is 0.02m3 and the headloss in the filter is 0.5m. Tests were carried out on borehole water and system filtered water. The results show that the portable tubular filter pipe performed relatively well in purifying borehole water. The model constructed for the tests was a prototype.
