ABSTRACT

Expatriates successful assignment has brought very complex and challenging issues currently faced by multinationals. Failed assignments are reported to be very high among expatriate. In light of this, this study provides new empirical evidence of recent expatriation management practices. The majority of the expatriates were dissatisfied with their living conditions and wanted an improvement in cross – cultural training. The major factors influencing expatriates’ low performance at work were security, expatriates’ maladjustment and culture shock experience. Furthermore majority of the expatriates reported that they were provided with host country’s culture and language training and therefore did not experience so much culture shock, but content analysis evidence showed that they did actually experience adjustments issues and culture shock and more focus was to be put in host country preparation. In conclusion, some recommendations for best practices were made.

ABSTRACT

This paper examines the link between monetary and fiscal policy in controlling unemployment in Nigeria using Ordinary Least Square method of estimation between the period 1991 and 2015. The research work made use of money supply and government expenditure as independent variables while the dependent variable was unemployment rate. Data was sourced from National Bureau of Statistics and Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletin. A multiple linear regression was formulated as model for the study. The findings revealed that money supply and government expenditure have significant impact on unemployment rate in Nigeria as shown by t-test and their probabilities. The F-test also showed that the models are significant in explaining the relationship that exists between all the variables. Therefore, the study concluded that monetary and fiscal policies both have significant impact on unemployment in Nigeria. Based on the findings from the data analysis in this research work, one can conclude that money supply and government expenditure has an important role to play in reducing the level of unemployment that the country is faced with and that if monetary and fiscal policy tools such as these are properly managed and implemented the resultant effect will be positive. The study recommends that monetary policies implemented by CBN should promote favourable investment atmosphere. The use of capital expenditure as a tool for long term growth should also be considered by policy makers.

ABSTRACT

Acute bacillary dysentery is a common health problem in the tropical countries. The routine method of microscopy culture and sensitivity (MC/S) for specimens sent to the medical microbiology laboratory, takes a minimum of 72hours for provisional diagnosis to be made and in developing countries where there is lack of modern technology for rapid diagnosis. Patients with acutebacillary dysentery suffer for longer period and this could be fatal. The purpose of this study therefore, was to determine the possibility of reducing the time spent on MC/S on stools from patients suffering from acute bacillary dysentery. A direct sensitivity test was carried out on carefully selected portion of blood and mucus stained stool  specimens from 100 patients  with acute bacillary dysentery sixty of the patients were in- patients in paediatric wards while forty of them were adults from out patients department, whose specimens were collected in the laboratory., fifty of the specimens yielded a heavy pure growth of Shigellaflexneri type 2,while the remaining fifty yielded a heavy pure growth of Shigellaflexneri type3 All the strains were sensitive to gentamici, neomycin and kanamycin, but resistant to ampicillin, erythromycine, chlorampheniocol and tetracycline. Al the patients were treated with 500mg/l of neomycine, mixed with mixed kaolin TD/S/7. Those on admission were discharge after three days, to continue their treatment at home. Direct sensitivity test can speed up treatment for patients with acute bacillary dysentery.

ABSTRACT

Maternal morbidity and mortality associated with pregnancy and childbirth is of clinical peril on a global scale. A cross sectional survey design was employed and the study aimed at exploring the level of awareness on Life Saving Skills (LSS), LSS practices been employed, barriers to implementation and strategies to promote effectiveness of LSS practice. A total sample of 154 nurses/midwives were recruited for the study at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano. The result showed that 87.0% of the nurses/midwives were aware of LSS, Majority of the nurses/midwives reported numerous challenges  to implementation of LSS some of which include Shortage of skilled birth attendant (93.5%), Attitude of health care provider (79.2%), Inadequate equipment and supplies (81.8%) and Inadequate training for midwives (77.9%);  they also identified some of the strategies to promote effectiveness of LSSsuch as Provision of lifesaving skills equipment (84.4%), Training and retraining of personnel in life saving skills (88.3%), Accessibility of patient to the life saving skills services (97.4%).  The study concluded that there is a high level of awareness on utilization of LSS. Therefore, it is recommended that multilateral collaboration is needed in the study setting to overcome the limiting factors to utilization of LSS.

ABSTRACT

Background-Osteoarthritis of the hands is a musculoskeletal disease with a considerable effect on patients’ lives.  The disease leads to pain in the affected joints with associated swelling, stiffness, deformity and gradual loss of function. Contrary to common belief, it is not necessarily a disease of older people, but also occur relatively early in life, impairing the patient’s capacity to work. Knowledge and research results in the field of hand osteoarthritis are however limited.
