Abstract

Cases of examination misconduct have been on the increase in various institutions of learning across the nation, the consequence of which has put a serious dent on the image of our educational system nationally and internationally, rendering procured certificates invalid while the half-baked products are unsuitable in the expected task. Some measures have been put in place to curtail this menace but all to no avail. This study identifies parents as important stakeholder in the educational system with a major role to play in tackling this ugly trend head-long. The investigator largely employs literature review to examine parental influence on examination malpractice. Parents are challenged to wake up to their responsibility of inculcating the right value in their children at the early stage of life to enable them shun vices in their later lives. In conclusion, the study recommends parental personal development of right values, as role models, closeness to the children as well as development of interest in their educational pursuits among other things in playing their expected roles and curbing examination malpractice in our educational system.


BIOLOGY TEACHER’S ATTITUDES TO IMPROVISATION OF MATERIALS FOR TEACHING BIOLOGY IN THE SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS ILORIN.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to identify and explain the attitudes of biology teachers to improvisation of instructional materials in the secondary schools located in Ilorin town. In specific terms, the objectives of the study were to: (i) ascertain the level of improvisation achieved by biology teachers; (ii) establish the nature of teachers attitudes to improvisation of learning materials; (iii) find out whether sex and experience of the teachers, as well as ownership and age of the school are important determinants of the attitudes of biology teachers to improvisation. After a broad background review of the related literature, a descriptive a research design with the survey method was adopted for the study. A researcher designed questionnaire was administered on the nineteen biology teachers were purposively selected from a random or ten senior secondary schools. Their responses were used to answer the five research questions and test the four null hypotheses raised in chapter one. Findings from the study included the following: (i) the level of improvisation of instructional materials among biology teachers in the senior secondary schools in Ilorin town was just average though the female teachers had a higher level of improvisation; (ii) Both the male and female biology teachers had a higher level of improvisation; (iii) Biology teachers in the private schools; those in the old schools and those with more experience had positive attitude to improvisation of instructional materials.

Abstract

The world is a global village that is moving with a speed of lightening and in it, decisions are made very fast through the quick access to correct and obtained current information.  In this village, Nigeria cannot afford to lag behind if she is to develop.  Development can be viewed as modernization, but more importantly, as growth in a positive direction.  Development can only take place with access to information that will lead to rational decisions, which will eliminate challenges in each sector of the economy.  Education as one of the sectors of the economy is expected to lead in this era of information technology, but it is unfortunate to note that many educational managers are yet to come to term with the new and better ways of managing information in their institutions. This paper therefore x-rays what internet services planning means, and how it’s unplanned can hinder the effective use of ICT in education vis-à-vis the pedagogical and technical expertise of the teacher as a critical component in computer education. In this 21st century, the official definition of an illiterate may mean someone who cannot operate or program a computer.

Abstract

This study examined the teachers’ professional competence and their impact on students’ academic performance in senior secondary schools in North Central Geo-Political Zone, Nigeria. Seven (7) research questions and four (4) hypotheses were formulated and tested for the study. Related literatures as well as empirical studies were also reviewed. The ex-post facto design was adopted for the study. The Population of the study was 27,221 and 5,496 Teachers, Principals’ and Students representing 20.2% of the total Population were sampled from 216 Senior Secondary Schools using tetrachoric random sampling. A 8-item instrument was developed for data collection titled ‘’Teacher Competence and Students’ Performance Questionnaire (TCSPQ). The instrument used for the study was a modified four point-Likert type questionnaire of Strongly Agreed (SA), Agree (A), Disagree (D) and Strongly Disagree (SD). Descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviations were used to answer the seven research questions, while chi-square (X2) test of goodness of fit was used to test the three hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance and multiple correlations (R) was used to test hypothesis four. The findings revealed that Teacher professional competence below average (2.43) on students’ academic performance in senior secondary Schools in North Central Geo-Political Zone, Nigeria. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that stakeholders in education should encourage teachers’ through attending conference, workshops, seminars and in-training service or sandwich programmes to develop professionally in senior secondary schools.

Abstract

Contribution of education in a national development of a Nation cannot be over-emphasized. Likewise education contribute immensely on entrepreneur skills acquisition, in the sense that it is a vehicle of passing instruction on how to do a particular exercise or event that lead into production of a product. This study examined the concept of entrepreneurship/entrepreneurial education, educational management, roles of education management and significant of records and record keeping in relation to promoting entrepreneurial trade in post-basic education. Conclusion and recommendations were made which include: Government at the centre, states and local should endeavour to provide all necessary equipment’s that will enhance entrepreneurship trade in secondary schools and basic schools. Government should as well as make the schools environment be conducive for teaching/learning process that will accommodate learning of trade by the learners among others.

Abstract: Nigeria as a country has always had highly recommended education programmes which sometimes have no positive effect on the society or often times die natural death due to poor implementation. This paper assesses the implementation related problems that hinders the attainment of MDGs in science education as well as the general goals of education. The paper identifies lack of proper retraining of teachers and supply, large class size, inadequate teaching facilities, deficient curriculum and overloaded syllabus as some of the problems.  The paper suggested the roles of government such as the recruitment of more science teachers and support staff, reform of the teacher education programme, the construction of more classroom blocks in the already existing schools as well as self improvement of individual teachers through workshops, seminars and in- service short training programmes in science if the country is to overcome the challenges of the MDGs in science education.

  ABSTRACT

The concept instructional materials are those materials both printed and non-printed, tools, equipment, gadgets, machines etc. used by the teacher or instructor in delivering instruction or lesson in other to inspire the leaners. The study aimed at finding out whether or not there is an effect of the use of instructional materials on student academic achievement in basic technology. The design adopted for this study was that of experimental design of the pre-test and post-test session. The posttest means scores of both the experimental and the control group was used in analyzing the Z-test tool. The population consist of students of JSS1,2 and3.each class were 41,43 and 50 respectively, which was used as the sample size since the students were not too much. In JSS1, there were 17 boys and 24 girls, in JSS2,there were 20 boys and 23 girls, while in JSS3,there were 20 boys and 30 girls. The analysis revealed that there was a statistically significant difference in the mean scores of the post test scores of students taught with instructional materials. Among others, it was recommended that, teachers of basic technology should ensure proper use of instructional materials, teachers of basic technology should also use creativity in improvising locally made instructional materials.
