ADOBE BRICK, AN EFFECTIVE CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL

ABSTRACT

Adobe bricks are known to be durable and long lasting when used in building construction, especially in dry climates like in Northern Nigeria or Southwest of the United States of America, New Mexico, for example.

In the Southwest of the United States of America, Adobe brick is produced by mixing soil (clay) with binding material straw and water. The straw holds the Adobe brick together like reinforcement, preventing the Adobe brick from cracking. Adobe bricks (mud bricks) are made of earth with fairly high clay content and straw. If produced manually the earth mix and cast in open mold on the ground and then left to dry out. Adobe bricks are only sun dried, not kiln – fired. When used for construction they are laid up into a wall using an earth mortar. Before drying out, the finished walls are smoothed down. Often a clay render is applied as a surface coating. The modern Adobe is stabilized with either emulsified asphalt or Portland cement up to 10% by weight.  However, most soil throughout the world is suitable for production of Adobe brick and it is economical. Sun backed clay bricks are one of earliest basic building materials used by man and indeed are still used today. This is because of their simplicity and low cost, low thermal conductivity, good acoustic properties, and at the end of a building’s life, the clay material can easily be reused by grinding, wetting or returned to the ground without any interference with the environment.

A TRIAL OF COMMONEST FISH IN AFRICA IN CONTROL OF VECTOR TRANSMITTING Wuchereria bancropti INFECTION (Wuchereriasis or bancroftian flariasis)

ABSTRACT

Two trials were made in this study involving single adult T. zillii. In the first trial, T. zillii was supplied with solely five hundred mosquito larvae which it ate in fifty minutes without break. After twenty four hours, a period for a complete digestion in the fish, the second trial was conducted in which five hundred mosquito larvae supplemented with 20g of fresh Earthworm were supplied to the same fish which it finished eating in two hours fifty six minutes with a break of twenty three minutes. From this study, it was observed that one adult T. zillii can eat ten larvae of mosquito in one minute without a food supplement hence it is efficient predator of mosquito larvae. It is therefore recommended that T. zilli can be introduced to where mosquito breeds for control purposes and a further research on predatory preference among different mosquito species larvae by T. zillii.

ABSTRACT

Modular construction has long been utilized in the construction of residential and many other commercial product types as a means for potentially quicker construction delivery times. A modular building is a pre-engineered structure that is flexible enough to satisfy virtually any requirement tougher than standard drywall construction, expandable, can be relocated and completely re-usable. One obvious advantage that modular construction has over conventional construction is cost. It can not only save up to 35% on the initial construction costs like labor and materials, but there are other benefits as well. It has been found that Modular coordination is an outstanding choice having a minimum on-site modification and material wastage. This paper addresses the numerous advantages of modular systems present in both design and construction works viz a viz buildings’ flexibility that could be applied to enhance modification.

RELIABILITY OF DISTRIBUTION NETWORKS IN NIGERIA: IKORODU, LAGOS STATE AS A CASE STUDY

ABSTRACT

Nigerians are experiencing a lot of difficulties as a result of poor Generation, Transmission and Distribution of electricity. As of 2016, the electricity energy consumption in the world from the world fact book revealed that the average power per capital (watts per person) in the United States is 1,377 Watts. In Canada, it is as high as 1,704 Watts per person and in South Africa; it is 445 Watts per person. The average power per capital in Australia is 1,112 Watts and in New Zealand it is 1,020 W per person. Whereas, the average electricity consumed in watts per person in Nigeria is just 14 Watts.  This has put Nigeria in a rank of 189 out of 219 countries estimated.  Currently, power generating capacity in Nigeria is estimated to be 6,803 megawatts, with average working capacity between 3,500 MW for over 170 million people (20.59 W/person). The power Companies in Nigeria face a lot of problems. Some of the highest priority issues being low generation of power, inadequate equipment and technical team for the clearance of faults, inadequate protection devices, transmission losses and low reliability of the distribution system. The Nigerian power problem has resulted to incessant planned, forced and unplanned outages. This has grounded many activities and has destroyed many industrial operations and processes. In addition, it has resulted to erratic and unreliable supply of electricity. It has reduced productivity and has increased unemployment and crime rates in the country. Hence, an analytical method is developed to study the dynamic- reliability of the distribution system, as well as optimizes the occurrence of faults and outages along the consumer point in each feeder in order to improve the performance of the system. A great need for fault evaluation and reliability studies of electric power system was observed. This research work analyzed the problems facing the Distribution System. Efforts were made to provide adequate solutions to the problems. The research work evaluated the occurrence and causes of faults and outages in the Distribution Network Area for a period of 8 years. In addition, it analyzed and reduced the effects of power losses along each of the feeders in the Distribution Network Area. This research work revealed the downtime, failure rate and reliability index along each of the eight feeders. It also improved the reliability and performance of the distribution system.

ABSTRACT

Nigeria is a heterogeneous nation with rich culture, history and heritage however with the advent of colonization, most ethnic groups have begun to lose their identities and pristine cultures. It is of great importance that this cultural heritage of our nation is preserved and promoted in order to give future generations a sense of belonging and a connection with the Past that could help conceive an ideal future. Museums can be said to breathe life into the past and are fabulous portrayals of the distinctive times of our social history as a country. This research work will give us a wider view on how museum architecture can positively create an enabling environment where our Nigerian Heritage can be preserved also help us appreciate our culture and identities additionally giving us motivations to be directed to safeguard them as we walk into our future, projecting to us the true Nigerian spirit of unity and faith, peace and progress (Nigerian Motto).Particularly in recent times where agitation and disunity, restructuring and all bids to break the nations unity is the new order of the day. It sets forth the importance of Museum in ensuring this task both on its functional and symbolic context. This Research work concludes that despite the impact of modernization we must as individuals, professionals, designers and researchers be cognizance of our cultural roots, thus harmonizing the traditional and modern contemporary design concepts in our works as it is everyone’s task to see the preservation of our heritage.


BUILDING MATERIALS MADE FROM AVAILABLE RAW MATERIALS IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The level of manufacturing of a country or continent is an indication of the level of the development of the country or continent. This paper identifies the most important factors affecting the production of building materials using locally available raw materials in developing countries. Work that has been done in this area of the building industry was looked at and the improvement provided by this work in areas of manufacturing method, raw materials and their sources are identified. Also, the locally available raw materials to manufacture the building materials were identified – fibre, waster paper, cement and water. This is followed with the analysis of test results. The products were tested to ascertain their reliability, porosity and impact the result showed that our products were very much better and cheaper than the conventional ones. Again a detailed cost analysis is included to establish the usefulness of this project. An example is included for comparison and finally comments were made and conclusions were drawn on the project. The final conclusion is that the project is feasible and very viable for the manufacture of building materials from locally sourced raw materials in Nigeria, so government and individuals of developing countries should invest in this research work to create jobs for young technologist for their respective countries.

ABSTRACT

The importance of public transit system has been growing increasingly in order to achieve smooth traffic in urban areas. One of the most used transit systems is the bus transit system. In this study, the focus will be on the role of bus transit system as public transportation. The first point is to review how to treat and to clarify the significance of bus transit system with exclusive bus-ways in public transportation planning. The second is to examine, through comparative analysis with other transit systems, the relationship between the approach of planning and operation of infrastructure and the transportation service offered. Despite the increasing popularity of luxury buses transportation in this country, little or nothing is available in regards to provision of terminal facilities to cope with the resultant explosion in the number of buses.

ABSTRACT

In this study on work-family interface and quality of work life of bank employees using (10) ten banks in port Harcourt metropolis, attempt has been made to elucidate  bank working system with particular reference to gauging the prevailing work-family conflict of bank staff in relation to the engineering of quality of worklife. The study revealed that effect differences by gender is not biologically given but rather socially derived; it also revealed that an individual experience within the family and within the workplace can simultaneously benefit and undermine functioning at home and at work which greatly influence his perceive quality of worklife. The study recommends that various provisions for quality of worklife (QWL) should be made proportional to the number of staff designed to work in the bank. Such outcomes should be appraised on the basis of code of corporate governance for banks in Nigeria post consolidation by CBN.
