ABSTRACT

This study examined the flood in Kaduna using the meteorological characteristics of Kaduna River watershed by Regression analysis with Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS 20). The hydrological parameters used for the study include; precipitation, relative humidity and temperature records from 2010 to 2014 collected from Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET). The results obtained from the flood model created using the meteorological records showed that 2011 has the highest values for discharge and river stage as 22553.1758mm3/s and 3.7.5353m respectively hence justifying the devastated flood during that period. From the results, correlation coefficient, R=0.497 and coefficient of determination, R2 = 0.247 for the model. The significant F of the discharge is 0.739 which is higher than 0.5 acceptable limits. These show the significance of the parameters used for creating the models were ok. The model can be adopted for flood studies in the basin for future studies.

A MULTI-DIMENSIONAL INTERNET SECURITY

ABSTRACT

Today, the World Wide Web is used for information, commerce, news, weather, music, audio and video conferencing, database access, file sharing, with new features cropping up almost daily. Each has its own security concerns and weaknesses. The frequency and sophistication of Internet attacks have increased. These changes in the Internet community and its security needs prompted the first bona fide defense measures. The network must be protected from outside attacks that could cause loss of information, breakdowns in network integrity, or breaches in security. As the Internet has matured, however, so have the threats to its safe use, and so must the security paradigms used to enable business use of the Internet. This paper presentation summarizes a multi-dimensional (which is mandatory these days to discourage ever-more sophisticated threats to the network) approach to security in the present scenario as against a single-dimensional approach, which is no longer adequate, and very much a popular target to attack. The will eventually make the country a safer nation on the net.

ABSTRACT

Corporate governance has been bounded by controversy due to the recent unfortunate events of unethical and irresponsible behavior by the managers as related to fraud and economic crises of international corporations. The purpose of this paper is to examine the theoretical and empirical literature on board leadership structure and the firm performance. The review willidentify the context in which corporate governance occurs as potential to international trends that focus on extensive body of knowledge on how CEO/Chair duality would influence the firm performance, and to figure out whether CEO/Chair duality has any certain impact on firm performance with reference to agency and stewardship theory, as there are mixed results produced by researchers. Finally, is of paramount important, if further theoretical studies are carried out to improve national and international standards concerning corporate governance with the aim of balancing the interests of organizations and their stakeholders

ABSTRACT

The existence of internal audit function is very important to any organization and to a large extent; this study has been able to establish that a relationship exists between internal auditing and bank performance. In Consistency with previous studies, this study provides a widespread of literatures and ideas on the relationship between internal audit and bank performance. This study is concerned with internal auditing and how it affects the performance of banks and it was executed by selecting four banks as case studies, specifically old generation banks and new generation banks. The outcomes of this study creates cognizance as to how internal auditing affects the performance of banks, thereby bridging the gap between internal auditing activities and internal audit performance-driven activities. The method of data collection was carried out through the administration of questionnaires; a total number of seventy-four (74) questionnaires were retrieved and analyzed using tables and simple percentages. The three hypothesis formulated were also tested using the one way T test. The findings show that internal auditing does influence bank performance. As a result of the extensive study carried out, the researcher and correspondents made a series of recommendations of which they pointed out that only qualified auditors should be appointed to carry out any audit activity so it can be done effectively, the banks in return should provide accurate information for the auditors and before any appointment of an auditor, the legitimacy of the internal auditors resume should be properly checked

ABSTRACT

Wastes constitute one of the most crucial health and environmental issues facing managers of cities and suburbs. Periodic markets have every other characteristics of a daily market apart from being opened on occasionally. As a result wastes are more likely to be left exposed or not properly managed. The study examined management and disposal of market waste in periodic markets in Ondo East and Odigbo local government areas of Ondo State. Four research questions and two hypotheses were stated to guide the findings of the study. The study employed the use of descriptive survey. The study was carried out on nine-one (91) market men and women. A structured questionnaire made up of 28 items was used for data collection. Responses to the questionnaire were analysed descriptively and inferential using frequency count, percentage, mean and t-test. Major findings revealed that the methods for disposing market wastes in periodic markets were land filling, incineration, open dumping, composting, mechanical destruction and public and private waste management. Further findings revealed that in periodic markets in Odigbo and Ondo East Local Government areas wastes were biologically, chemically or thermally treated. Wastes were left to decompose, packed in polythene bags for pick up, differentiated by type, sold to individuals in need of them, burnt to reduce its size and chemicals were added to detoxify wastes. It was recommended that through market meeting and organisation of different marketers there should be creation of special agencies for the collection of wastes in periodic markets. To differentiate each category and type of waste, organizations could have different arrangement for disposing and treating market wastes and that government should make concerted effort with the community to recycle and convert solid waste to wealth.

ABSTRACT

Hexokinase 1 (EC:2.7.1.1) which belongs to the Hexokinase 2 superfamily is the first key regulatory enzyme in the glycolytic pathway of Trypanosoma brucei brucei. Therefore the enzyme has great significance in metabolism of the parasite particularly for the purpose of generating ATP and nucleic acid precursors. There is increasing interest in the study of enzymes in parasites for various purposes. This research therefore attempted to detect the presence of the hexokinase 1 gene in Trypanosoma brucei brucei (Federe isolate) which is prevalent in Nigeria. The parasites were grown in rats, harvested and purified using diethyl amino ethyl (DEAE) cellulose chromatography. From the genomic DNA isolated the hexokinase 1 gene was amplified through Polymerase Chain Reaction. The amplicon was sequenced and studied using some Bioinformatics tools. The 1401bp gene sequence (Accession number MH 198230) obtained translated into 464 amino acid sequence.  The primary nucleotide sequence of the gene compares well with Trypanosoma brucei TREU 927 and T. brucei gambienseDAL972.The predicted molecular mass of the polypeptide as calculated using ExPASy is 51,918.50Da (~52kDa) giving the hexameric protein a molecular weight of around 311.5kDa which  differs from the mammalian hexokinase The Isoelectric point (pI) was predicted as 9.64indicating that atneutral pH, the enzyme has a netpositive charge. These revealed that the T.b.bruceihexokinase 1 is active in the bloodstream form of the parasite.

ABSTRACT

Halitosis or bad breath is an unpleasant or offensive odour of the mouth emanating from oral cavity present on exhaled breath. According to medical experts, this very embarrassing condition which can be acute or chronic could be caused by several factors including food, poor dental hygiene, tobacco products, health problems, dry mouth, infections, and medications. Halitosis is detrimental to one’s self-image and confidence causing social, emotional and psychological anxiety. Some food products (barley tea, green tea etc) and plant extracts (Eucalyptus, ginger, aloe vera and coconut) are claimed to be effective in controlling halitosis. To this notice, investigation of some selected plant extracts is conceived as an efficient way to control halitosis. This study was carried out to investigate the mixed extract of Eucalyptus globulus, ginger, aloe vera and coconut oil for the control of halitosis. Organolyptic measurements were used to check for the presence of halitosis. There were 24 volunteers from Science laboratory Technology Federal Polytechnic Idah, aged between 20 to 25 years old. The result of the first examiner before administration of the mouth wash showed that 3(12.5%) absence, moderate and strong malodour, 2(8.30%) had questionable malodour, 6(25.00%) had slight malodour,  and 7(29.16%) had severe malodour whereas the result after the administration of the mouth wash showed that 14(58.33%) had absence of malodour, 4(16.67) had questionable and slight malodour, 0(0.00%) had moderate and strong malodour and 2(8.30%) had strong malodour. The result of the second examiner before the administration of the mouth wash showed that 3(12.50%) had absence, questionable, moderate and strong malodour, 5(20.83%) had slight malodour and 7(29.16%) had severe malodour  whereas the result after the administration of the mouth wash showed that 14(58.33%) had absence of malodour, 2(8.30%) had questionable malodour, 5(20.83%) had slight malodour, 0(0.00%) had moderate, strong and severe malodour. The antimicrobial activity of the mixed extract against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeurginosa and Klebsiella pneumonia was determined and their zones of inhibitions were 16, 17, 14 and 13 mm respectively at 80ul. The mixed extract was active against the microorganism which are causative agent of halitosis in vitro. There was great reduction in the number of volunteers who had halitosis when the mixed extract was administered. So the mixed extract was effective against the microorganisms which cause halitosis in vivo. It was also able to give fresh breath and reduce oral malodour
