ABSTRACT: In recent years, Nigerians have expressed serious concern over the quality of University graduates. In spite of efforts and studies on quality assurance in the Nigerian university education system, the problem of low quality still persists in the system. This raises the question of the use of quality control measures (benchmarking periodic review and minimum standard including exchange programme for staff and students), in ensuring quality within the system. This study, therefore, investigated the influence of benchmarking periodic review and minimum standard including exchange programme for staff and students as predictors of quality of graduates in public Universities in Nigeria. Descriptive survey research of the ex-post facto type was adopted. Stratified random sampling technique was used to select 30 deputy vice-chancellors, 225 heads of department and 1125 lecturers and fifteen public conventional Universities spread across the six geo-political zones in the nation. Four research instruments namely Quality Control Measures Questionnaire for Heads of Department (r = 0.83), Quality Control Questionnaire on University Ranking (r = 0.77), Quality Control Questionnaire for Lecturers (r = 0.79) and Quality of Graduate Record Format Checklist were used. Two research questions were tested at the 0.05 level of significance.  Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Multiple Regression. Benchmarking periodic review and minimum standards (β = 0.35): post UTME (β = 0.27); and exchange programmes for staff and students (β = 0.14); had significant positive contribution to the quality of graduates. Benchmarking periodic review and minimum standard were fairly adhered to (weighted average = 2.51) that is apart from NUC and senate of universities, other stakeholders such as educational policy makers also participate in the monitoring of quality in the universities. Quality control measures exert great influence on the quality of graduates in public universities in Nigeria. Therefore, the National Universities Commission (NUC) should continually monitor the quality control measures to enhance higher quality of graduates. Adequate facilities and equipment should be provided for the universities to meet the needs of the system and periodic exchange programmes for lecturers and students should be provided.

ABSTRACT

This paper on Leadership, Corruption and Governance in Nigeria argues that of all the problems, challenges and crises militating against Nigeria’s quest for socio-politico-economic development, the most daunting appear to be ineffective leadership, untamed and seemingly untamable corruption and bad governance. The paper examines the concept of leadership in all its ramifications, compares and contrasts the various known types/styles of leaderships, with a view to adumbrate the trajectory of an efficacious leadership modus operandi capable of supplementing and complementing the relentless efforts aimed at finding solutions to Nigeria’s myriad problems. The paper also examines the enigmatic nature of corruption in Nigeria, the various types of corrupt practices at Local, State, National and Non-governmental levels and makes recommendations on tackling the menace of corruption in the country. Finally, the paper focuses attention on barometers of good governance, which if implemented to the latter will is hope to cultivate a modus Vivendi for Nigerians to safe Nigeria, undoubtedly from hitting the ‘Road to Kigali,’ governance morass, economic chaos, social pandemonium, political hullabaloo and immobilism. The paper advises the followers/citizens/residents to play their own part/role of efficient performance of obligatory and non-obligatory civic duties.

ABSTRACT

If you educate a female then you have successfully educated a nation, goes the sayings: so female – child education has become a contemporary issue to nations in the world because girls/women are usually discriminated against in all spheres of life including education. It is based on this, that this paper examines the female – child marginalization and with unequal access to education compared to male counterpart. The study reveals that cultural practices serve as hindrance to female-child education and that inaccessibility of the female – child education  makes  vulnerable  diseases  such  as  HIV/AIDS,  early  marriage,  denial  of fundamental rights and child labour. The paper concluded that if female-child education is fostered, she will be self-reliant, adequately socialize and well empowered to contribute meaningfully  to  the  community  as  well  as  skills  of  problems  solving  to  an  appreciable extent. The paper therefore recommends that education should be made accessible to the female-child  at  all  levels  and  awareness  programme  should  be  mounted  to  redeem  the image of the female-child to make the world a better place for her to live.
